Outdoor fire features have become the centerpiece of modern hardscape. HPC Fire Inspired offers the largest variety of certified outdoor fire designs. One of HPC’s core values is continuous improvement which includes providing education to installers and consumers alike. This Tech Talk is for contractors, designers, and consumers to build awareness around 5 of the most common pitfalls HPC sees in the field. Our certified Tech experts will offer full proof steps to ensure the safety and performance of fire designs, that will be sure to lead to client satisfaction.
-
Improper Gas Supply Line
The number one reason fire designs do not perform to their greatest capacity is connecting appliances to an improperly sized gas line. Individuals often mistakingly view the burner as the culprit; however, the gas line is what supplies the fuel to ignite the burner. For example, a 140K BTU burner choked by a ½” line run at 40′ will not come close to supporting a full flame output. Improper gas line sizing results in poor flame height, delayed ignition, and disappointed clients.
Smart fix: Do not assume any gas line can supply the amount of fuel needed for the type and size of your fire pit. Always size the line for total BTU load, distance, and gas type: Natural Gas (NG) or Propane (LP). HPC’s Certified Tech Support team helps contractors confirm sizing before installation has begun—saving callbacks and rework. For more insight on how to properly size your gas line see this Tech Talk about Gas Line Sizing:

Ignoring Ventilation Requirements
Ensuring proper ventilation is often an overlooked step for built-in installations: this crucial step is especially important in stone or masonry enclosures. Without proper intake and exhaust, trapped gas pockets can form leading to potential safety hazards and delaying ignition. To learn more about why ventilation matters, check out HPC’s Tech Talk:

Smart fix: HPC’s enclosure ventilation kits and burner instructions provide proper recommendations for the required vent openings for both natural gas and propane. Proper vent placement not only improves safety but promotes consistent flame performance. For more information about proper ventilation, check out HPC’s YouTube video highlighting ventilation tips:

Treating Every Burner the Same
Burner geometry is not just cosmetic. Linear, PENTA, Torpedo, and trough burners each behave differently depending on pressure, media, and enclosure shape. Using the wrong pattern can starve the flame or create an aesthetic that looks out of scale within the space.
Smart fix: Be sure to match burner style to design intent. For broad seating groups, HPC’s H-Burners deliver wider flame distribution. For compact round pits, PENTA burners offer taller, fuller flame presentation and use less fuel. Need help selecting the proper components to your fire designs, utilize HPC’s fire pit selector:

Overlooking Ignition Experience
Clients want simplicity and being able to control the flame within their design improves their overall experience. Manual match-lit works fine on budget builds, but premium applications increasingly expect push-button, electronic ignition, or smart controls. It is important to carefully plan out your design, to understand which ignition style suites your purpose check out HPC’s Tech Talk:

Smart fix: HPC offers ignition tiers from Match-Lit to On/Off to Commercial-Grade Electronic Ignition Systems (EI) and Bluetooth control. Planning out ignition controls early in the design phase helps inform the specs of the build avoiding cramped compartments for added mechanicals as well as code compliance issues.

No Plan for Service or Future Upgrades
Once hardscape designs are finished, changing a valve or module under 3″ of stone or masonry becomes painful. Professionals sometimes design for the install, but neglect to plan for the need for serviceability or future enhancements.
Smart fix: HPC’s modular fire pit components allow upgrades from manual ignition to electronic systems without demolition. Planning for access equals happier clients — and fewer warranty headaches.
The HPC Advantage
