Gas burning fire pits have become a centerpiece of modern outdoor living. They offer warmth, beauty, and convenience without the mess of wood or smoke. HPC Fire Inspired has long been the industry leader in technology and safety and as with any fuel-burning appliance, safety should always come first especially when dealing with gas appliances. HPC takes special care to ensure every appliance remains in compliance with industry safety standards. HPC’s team would like to educate consumers about proper precautions to take to avoid issues with carbon monoxide (CO).

What is Carbon Monoxide:

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced when fuels like natural gas or liquid propane burn incompletely. In enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, CO can build up quickly, posing serious health risks.

Following Installation Guidelines Is Key To Safety:

When installed and used correctly, HPC Fire Inspired fire features pose little to no risk for CO poisoning. HPC’s Fire Features are designed and certified to be used outdoors in open air environments; therefore, the risk of CO accumulation is very low. Fresh air helps rapidly disperse any gases produced during combustion. However, CO risks increase significantly if the fire features is installed in an enclosed space such as a garage or 3- sided covered patio.

Many customers ask whether it’s safe to use a gas fire pit under a covered patio. The answer depends on ventilation and the design of the covering. The patio must be open on at least 3 sides and meet manufacturers clearances. When in doubt consult your licensed gas professional.

When designing or planning an HPC fire Feature there some key carbon monoxide safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Use Outdoors Only. Our gas fire pits are intended for outdoor use only. Never use them inside a home, garage, shed, camper, or any partially enclosed space—even if it seems “open.” Roofs, awnings, or walls can trap CO, leading to dangerous levels.
  • Ensure Proper Air Flow. Make sure your fire pit is in a well-ventilated area. Keep at least 10 feet of clearance from any structures, trees, fences, or overhangs. Good airflow is essential to allow CO to disperse safely.
  • Inspect and Maintain Regularly. Regularly inspect your fire feature for leaks, clogged burners, blocked ventilation openings or signs of rust or corrosion. HPC highly recommends scheduling an annual inspection by a a gas professional to ensure all components are running properly.
  • Follow the Manufacturer’s Guidelines. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation, use, and maintenance.
  • Never Leave Your Fire Feature Unattended While In Use. Even though HPC gas fire pits are easy to use, they should never be left running unattended. Always shut off the gas supply after use and allow the fire pit to cool before covering or storing.

Gas-burning fire pits by HPC Fire Inspired are designed with safety in mind—and when used as intended, they provide a safe and enjoyable experience. Understanding the basics of carbon monoxide and respecting proper ventilation and installation guidelines ensures you and your loved ones stay safe while enjoying and creating memorable moments fireside.
