HPC Fire Inspired believes knowledge is power. Our team wants to ensure consumers have the knowledge to take the proper precautions to facilitate a safe and efficient installation. There are several technical considerations that are imperative to keep in mind when preparing for installation. This Tech Talk will walk you through the essential steps providing tips for installing a gas-burning fire pit.
Understanding Local Codes and Regulations
Before you begin, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with local building codes and regulations. In many areas, installing a gas-burning fire pit requires a permit, and there may be specific restrictions regarding placement, size, ignition types and safety features. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines or being required to remove the fire pit. HPC offers a wide range of options for your installation, including CSA certified inserts which comply with many codes and regulations. HPC goes the extra mile ensuring that our fire designs are safe and reliable. Learn more about our certified offerings that meet the highest of standards.
- TIP: Once you understand your codes and regulations then you can choose the HPC Fire inspired insert that best fits your needs.
Selecting The Optimal Location
Choosing the right location for your HPC fire pit is vital for safety and functionality. Refer to HPC’s installation instruction and follow all clearance requirements based on the size and location of the fire feature you have chosen. Additionally, the installation area should be open and well-ventilated, avoiding overhangs or enclosed spaces where gas could accumulate.
- TIP: Be sure to read and understand the safety requirements and installation instructions prior to commencing installation.
Planning The Gas Supply
A critical step of installing an HPC Fire Inspired fire feature is planning the gas supply line. Whether you choose natural gas or propane, the line must be properly installed to ensure a safe and consistent fuel supply. It’s advisable to work with a licensed plumber or gas technician for this crucial step. Improper installation can lead to leaks or insufficient gas flow. Proper gas line sizing and installation must factor the BTU input rating of the selected insert, gas type, gas line pressure and the type of gas pipe being installed. Advance planning will go a long way. Taking the time to consult with professionals will best inform your installation. See here for more information.
- TIP: Work with a licensed plumber or gas specialist to ensure the gas line is sized and installed properly.
Electrical Requirements For Electronic Ignition
HPC Fire Inspired offers a wide range of CSA certified fire features from match-lit to electronic ignition. When selecting an HPC electronic ignition unit there will need to be an electrical circuit run to the fire feature location. Consult your local building official for codes and regulations. If you are planning to add a fire feature around your pool for instance it will be important to select a low voltage unit (24v or 12v). If selecting a 120v volt insert, be sure to install an outdoor GFCI outlet for the insert.
- TIP: Understand any electrical requirements that are needed for your HPC insert before installation. Review HPC’s installation guide and if you have questions or concerns reach out to our team of certified experts for further consultation.
Proper Ventilation Requirements
Proper ventilation for your HPC fire feature insert is crucial to prevent gas build-up and ensure the fire pit functions safely. Your Fire Feature enclosure must be constructed from non-combustible materials such as stone, pavers, or concrete. The enclosure must include ventilation openings for adequate airflow. Refer to the HPC installation instructions for proper ventilation requirements based on size and BTU ratings. It’s essential from a safety and operation standpoint to install vents on opposite sides to allow for adequate airflow. Without proper ventilation, gas can accumulate, creating a hazardous situation. To gain a deeper understanding about proper ventilation check out HPC’s Tech Talk discussing the importance of proper ventilation.
- TIP: Consult the HPC installation instruction to understand the ventilation requirements and consider adding additional vents for larger than average fire features.
Testing For Gas Leaks
Once your HPC Fire Inspired fire pit insert is installed and the gas line is connected, it’s imperative to test for leaks before using the fire pit. This can be done by creating a simple soapy water solution that is applied to all connections and joints. If bubbles form, this indicates a gas leak that needs to be addressed immediately.
- TIP: Always perform a leak test whenever you service, reconnect or modify the gas supply.
Using the Right Fill Materials
The materials you use to fill your HPC fire pit insert around the burner can affect both the safety and aesthetics of your fire pit. Approved materials such as lava rocks or fire glass are ideal, as they can withstand high temperatures. Avoid using materials like river stones, which can absorb moisture and potentially explode when heated. Refer to HPCs installation instructions for proper placement of the fire feature media.
- TIP: Never use any natural dense stones like river stones, gravel or natural stones, which can absorb moisture and potentially explode when heated. Only use material that is fire certified.
Ongoing Maintenance and Safety Checks
Regular maintenance is key to ensuring the longevity and safe operation of your HPC gas-burning fire pit. Periodically check the burner and gas connections for signs of wear or blockages. Also, keep the fire pit clean and free of debris, and always turn off the gas supply when the fire pit is not in use. Be sure any ventilation openings are not blocked with debris. Inspect critical components of your ignition system.
- TIP: Schedule an annual inspection with a professional to ensure all components and features are in good working order.
By following these steps and understanding the technical tips, you can install an HPC Fire Inspired gas-burning fire pit that not only enhances your outdoor space but also operates safely and efficiently. Whether you’re opting for natural gas or propane, proper planning, installation, and maintenance are key to enjoying your fire pit for years to come. Always prioritize safety and consult with professionals when needed to ensure a successful installation.
