HPC’s tech team have received a number of inquiries about why their newly installed fire appliance is burning blue. Don’t be blue, HPC has got you. This Tech Talk is dedicated to educating our consumers around the reasons that the flame may appear to be blue as well as action steps to be taken that will achieve HPC’s signature campfire flame.

Too Much OxyGen:
Too much oxygen can cause the flame to burn blue. The amount of oxygen in LP gas is controlled by the air mixer on your fire pit. In addition, there have been instances where consumers ordered a fire appliance to be tooled for hook up with propane (LP gas) but upon receiving the unit hook it to natural gas. The orifice on the unit would not have been tooled for natural gas causing the air mixer to get too much oxygen therefore the unit displays a blue flame. When this error is made, it is important to shut the unit down as it can cause damage to the control valve which could lead to further damage of the fire appliance. Looking forward to the future, HPC has further enhanced technology to combat human error. Coming to the market the summer of 2022 HPC will release our patented Universal Gas Orifice technology. This technology will allow consumers to easily change the gas type with a simple three step process. This advancement enhances the consumer experience by removing the hassle of purchasing as well as installing a new orifice.

Unseasoned Media:
The most common reason that the flame on your fire appliance will appear blue is unseasoned media. Per Chuck Parsons’, “it is most common for a flame to burn blue when using lava rock. This is so because lava rock is more porous and retains moisture.” Fortunately, this cause has a straightforward resolution. Simply season the media by burning the flame for at least 45 minutes. This will allow the moisture to burn away creating HPC’s signature flame. In addition, this action can be taken if the fire appliance is left uncovered after a heavy rain. HPC recommends covering your appliance while not in use, as well as taking the time to conduct maintenance checks to extend the longevity of your unit. HPC’s signature Stainless Steel Torpedo Burners are unaffected by wet media as the burner ports remain uncovered and are even with the media. The SS Torpedo Burner would be a great fit for any outdoor space as it can withstand the harshest of elements and is guaranteed to light every time.
