The Difference Stainless Makes

HPC Fire inspired takes great care in selecting materials utilized in our appliances. In this Tech Talk we will review different grades of stainless steel focusing on durability as well as cost point. Our goal is to share our industry knowledge passing benefits on to our consumers.

What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel has the same carbon and iron characteristics of standard steel, but with added elements of chromium and nickel giving it resistant to corrosion. The grade of stainless steel is dependent on the amount of chromium added to the steel. To be rated as stainless steel, the material must contain at least 10.5% chromium and may contain much higher amounts depending on the level of grade of the stainless steel.

Most Common Grades of Stainless Steel:

There are many different grades of stainless steel. Ranging from the 300 series, to the 400 series as well as the 900 series. Each grade possesses their own unique qualities and applications and price points. For the purposes of this article we will focus on the 2 most commonly utilized; the 304 and 316.

304 stainless steel is widely the most common stainless used due to its corrosion resistance and its cost. To achieve a 304 grade rating, the metal must contain 16 to 24 percent chromium and up to 35 percent nickel, along with other smaller amounts of alloys. 304 stainless steel, also known as 18/8 has 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. This gives it excellent resistance to oxidizing acids. This resistance makes it ideal for HPC Fire Inspired outdoor appliances. Stainless steel can withstand much more time and abuse before showing signs of wear. Over time, 304 Stainless Steel can oxidize. However, there are simple ways to combat oxidation. Such as cleaning the appliance regularly as well as utilizing a cover when not in use.

316 stainless steel contains the same alloys as 304 stainless steel, the key difference is the addition of molybdenum. This element provides resistance to chloride, saline salt air and other solvents. However, the addition of molybdenum drives up the cost of appliances dramatically.

When selecting materials for HPC Fire Inspired appliances our team considers 3 key factors: durability, availability and cost. 316 Stainless Steel offers slight additional benefits but the higher price point is not justifiable. 304 stainless steel delivers the quality, durability and cost our customers expect in our appliances.

The 304 stainless offers the durability needed to withstand harsh elements at a fair and competitive price point within the marketplace. In addition, HPC Fire Inspired offers a hassle-free lifetime warranty on all our 304 stainless steel pans and burners giving our customers additional peace of mind.
